Tucked away in the hills above Nerja and the whitewashed streets of Frigiliana, La Roca Rara is an extraordinary place to stay. It is one of the area’s most exclusive villas, chosen by Lumeah for its privacy, beauty and quiet, understated luxury. From the moment you arrive, you are surrounded by views of soft rolling hills and the glittering Mediterranean, yet you are still less than an hour from Málaga airport.
Originally designed and built in 1970 by a wealthy American industrialist, La Roca Rara was inspired by the elegance of the Alhambra Palace. It has recently been lovingly refurbished and updated, blending historic character with modern comfort. Inside, you will find marble floors, grand archways and high ceilings alongside plush furnishings, high-quality linens and thoughtful touches that make it feel both opulent and deeply relaxing.
The villa sits in around 2.5 acres of mature gardens and orchards, overlooking both the mountains and the sea. It is completely secluded, with its own private access road, secure entry gates and ample parking. On the main floor alone there are 1,000 square metres of accommodation, creating a sense of space and calm that is ideal for therapeutic work, group connection and quiet personal reflection. The main lounge, with its central fireplace, opens onto a large south-facing terrace where you can sit with coffee at sunrise or watch the sky change colour in the evenings. Housekeepers keep the villa in beautiful condition each day, so you do not have to worry about chores and can focus fully on you.
There are eight luxurious, spacious bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom. All of the rooms open directly onto the pool courtyard, so you step out each morning to sunshine, blue sky and the sound of the water. Every bedroom also has an enclosed terrace, offering a private corner for journaling, reading, or simply taking a breath between retreat sessions. You can choose single occupancy, shared occupancy (two people per room), or a non-residential place if you prefer to stay off-site.
The swimming pool sits within a sheltered internal courtyard, offering privacy while still enjoying both sun and shade throughout the day. Outside, the terraces and gardens are designed for living outdoors: morning swims, shaded areas to read or reflect, and open spaces for yoga, movement and breathwork. For those who like to move their bodies, there is also a private tennis court and expansive outdoor areas for gentle walks, stretching or quiet time in nature. There are peaceful spots everywhere – a chair in the shade, a bench facing the horizon – so you can easily step out of the group when you need a moment to yourself.
